Portrait of a Dragon

We wrote these poems after reading Portrait of a Dragon by Moira Andrews. We hope she won't mind us changing her poem a bit!

If I were an artist

I’d paint the portrait of a dragon.

To do a proper job

I’d borrow colours from the world.

For his fangs I’d use

The bright pink of budding apple trees.

For his legs I’d use

The dirty brown of muddy knees.

For his tail I’d use

The colour of a cushion as multi-coloured as Joseph’s coat.

For his horns I’d use

The dark black of a castle moat.

For his eyes I’d use

Silver like a shining machine.

But I’d keep the best till last.

For his hot breath I’d use

The flaming red of a burning bonfire.

I’d paint the portrait of a dragon.

To do a proper job

I’d borrow colours from the world.

For his arms I’d use

A shiny green like waving grass.

For his big tummy I’d use

The wood of a mighty oak.

For his tail I’d use

A long ribbon like a horse’s mane.

For his teeth I’d use

A dagger as sharp as a lazer.

For his nose I’d use

A very long stick.

But I’d keep the best till last.

For his hot breath I’d use

A ruby like hot fire.

If I were an artist

I’d paint the portrait of a dragon.

To do a proper job

I’d borrow colours from the world.

For his scales I’d use

plates of iron.

For his nose I’d use

A knobbly potato.

For his eyes I’d use

Old car tyres

For his claws I’d use

Blunt pencils.

For his teeth I’d use

Razor sharp knives.

But I’d keep the best till last.

For his hot breath I’d use

A red autumn leaf.

If I were an artist

I’d paint the portrait of a dragon.

To do a proper job

I’d borrow colours from the world.

For his tail I’d use

A thin and long stick.

For his eyes I’d use

Two sparkling stars.

For his nose I’d use

Huge grey rocks.

For his teeth I’d use

Small, gold daggers.

For his wings I’d use

 A long motorway

But I’d keep the best till last.

For his hot breath I’d use

The shining sun.
